There is some great news coming out of Redmond today around some of the feature improvements being delivered via Window Office 2007 Service Pack 2, scheduled for the first half of 2009. Service Pack 2 will incorporate document support for

XML Paper Specification (XPS)
Portable Document Format (PDF) 1.5, PDF/A
Open Document Format (ODF) v1.1
What does this mean?

Well it means that when uses create documents in Microsoft Office 2007, they can save it in to any of the formats natively (without having to install third-party updates).

Now of course some people will say what about the recently approved OpenXML standard? Well much of that standard is already supported in Office 2007 today, but we will see the full implementation of OpenXML in the next version of Office code named “Office 14″

Then in addition to all of this goodness, Microsoft is also committed to providing the ability to open, edit and save documents in the Uniform Office Format (UOF), which is the Chinese national document format.

There is always going to be a lot of sensationalism about Microsoft supporting ODF, especially when OpenXML has just been approved, but that is not the way to look at this announcement. Lets be clear, I don’t see this as being all about ODF and OpenXML, in fact there are three other standards being supported here in addition to ODF. This is Microsoft, being a responsible company, listening to the customer, understanding their needs, and working to deliver a solution that delivers the greatest choice
Comment 1:
I feel completely cheated by the purchase of a current shipping modern Microsoft product i.e. Office 2007. I hate Microsoft for not supporting ISO 29500 in Office 2007 and making us upgrade to a newer version of Office. I sincerely wish there will an overwhelming outcry now regarding this and Microsoft will reconsider its decision.
Comment 2:
One of the things you need to understand is that while implementing support for a new file format such as ODF is substantial work, changes to existing formats can often be more complex because we need to maintain backwards compatability between the two formats.

Also you should consider this about your purchase of Office 2007, while having a document standard incorporated is important, was it your primary driver for acquisition. Consider the other benefits that you get from using Office 2007… productivity improvements, creativtiy enhancements. Consider the different ways that you can utilize Office in your workplace today, you can use Office as a front end to your business applications like SAP, Siebel, in fact almost anything because Office can be used as a development platform. You can use Excel for instance as an analytical tool against databases. I have built these myself for analysts to monitor pricing in the market every 5 seconds, it was really cool, and I did that in Excel 95!!!

There are so many other reasons why you would buy Office 2007 besides a document standard, and I would encourage you to consider the time savings and productivity enhancements you get out of using the product to deliver value back from your purchase.

Q1. What is MCSE?
MCSE is the premier Microsoft certification program and is one of the most widely recognized, pursued, and obtained technical certifications in the IT industry. The MCSE certification proves your skills in managing backoffice computer systems and networks that run on Microsoft Windows 2000, XP and other Microsoft software.

Q2. What is happening to old (pre Windows 2000) MCSEs?

All MCSE certifications based on the Windows NT operating system will be designated as “MCSE on Windows NT” indefinitely, reversing an earlier decision to expire one’s MCSE credential if not updated before Dec. 31, 2001. Microsoft will designate Windows .NET Server, Windows XP, and Windows 2000-based MCSEs as “MCSEs on Microsoft Windows 2000.”

Q3. Who is MCSE targeted for?

The MCSE certification is targeted at the following job functions that use Microsoft Windows and backoffice applications:
Network administrators
Network engineers
Systems engineers
Security analysts
Email administrators
Windows system administrators
Microsoft website administrators/webmasters

Q4. Will I find a job/make more money if I earn my MCSE?

MCSE certified professionals are still in relatively high demand. The MCSE certification continues to be the most popular and sought after technical certification in the market today. There are over 400,000 MCSEs nationwide. MCSEs with three to nine years of experience have an average annual salary of $52,700.

Q5. Are there any pre-requisites before starting MCSE training?

Microsoft recommends that candidates have at least one year experience implementing and maintaining a network operating system in a typical medium to large organization, one year experience implementing and maintaining desktop operating systems, and one year experience designing network architectures. Microsoft Certified Professionals Magazine’s 2000 Salary Survey found that the average MCSE candidate had 5.9 years for experience while the average MCSE + Internet candidate had 7 years of experience.

However, there are a number of courses available designed to help less advanced students get up to speed on Microsoft technologies and prepare for MCSE certification faster.

Q6. Are there different tracks? What’s happening to the MCSE+I Certification.

Microsoft has indicated that the MCSE+I (Internet) certification is being phased out and it was not offered with the MCSE 2000 certification.

Q7. How long does it take to prepare for MCSE certification?

According to Microsoft Certified Professionals Magazine, the average candidate in 1999 spent 361 hours preparing for the MCSE exams and 364 preparing for the MCSE + Internet exams.

Q8. How much does MCSE training cost?

It depends on how you prepare for the exams and how much experience you already have. According to Microsoft Certified Professionals Magazine, the average candidate in 1999 spent $6,714 preparing for their MCSE exams and $5,945 preparing for the MCSE + Internet exams.

Q9. Do I have to take computer training to earn my MCSE certification?

No, all you have to do is pass the exams. However, the exams are necessarily very difficult and most candidates, even those with extensive experience, find it helpful to attend classes to help prepare for the exams.

Q10. What benefits does Microsoft offer for MCSEs?

Microsoft offers a number of benefits to MCSEs, including use of the MCSE logo, discounts on software and training, and free access to additional online documentation and information. Please check with Microsoft for a list of current benefits.

Q11. Can I upgrade/update my previous MCSE certification?

Microsoft offers an accelerated path that allows a candidate to become certified by passing four exams rather then the 7 normally required.

The certification you choose will be very dependant upon your current position or planned career path. Microsoft certifications are designed to take advantage of specific skills and enhance your expertise.

So what is your job title? The information below should help you decide what certification path is right for you.

Software Application Developer

The MCAD (Microsoft Certified Application Developer) and MCPD (Microsoft Certified Professional Developer) certifications are for you. The MCPD establishes you as an expert developing on a variety of platforms using Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0. The MCAD encompasses the application lifecycle from development to maintenance. If you are interested in analysis and design, go for the MCSD (Microsoft Certified Solution Developer). An MCSD has full knowledge of the application lifecycle from analysis through design, development, testing and maintenance.

Systems Engineer

Depending upon the level of knowlege you need, an MCSE or MCSA are great choices. The MCSE is an industry standard and provides the skills to do everything from analysis of business requirements to design and implementation of infrastructures. The MCSA is one step down and takes out the analysis and design, focusing on managing and troubleshooting system environments.

IT Business Analyst

A Microsoft Office Master combined with a MCP or MCSD would be very useful for most business analysts. An Office Specialist certification would demonstrate expert knowledge of Microsoft Office products. A MCP would be a great starting point for additional certifications. Be sure to choose an exam that will apply to any future cert tracks you may take. The MCSD would be the ultimate certification because it encompases the entire application lifecycle from analysis through design, development, testing and maintenance.

Systems Analyst

As a Systems Analyst you will perform many rolls and could need a MCAD or MCSD depending upon which stages of the application lifecycle you will need to know. The MCAD (Microsoft Certified Application Developer) encompasses the application lifecycle from development to maintenance. However, for an analyst, the MCSD (Microsoft Certified Solution Developer) may be necessary to encompass the full application lifecycle from analysis through design, development, testing and maintenance.

Software Engineer

As a MCSD you would be the decisive expert on all aspects of the application lifecycle. You would know how to design and develop using Microsoft development tools, technologies, and platforms. As an MCSE you would have the knowledge to do the analysis, design, and implementation of infrastructures. Depending upon the demands of your job or where you want to go with your career, either of these certs is an excellent choice.

Database Analyst/Administrator Web Application Developers Internet Developers

The obvious choice is the MCDBA (Microsoft Certified Database Administrator). It is the most respected certification for those who are responsible for the implementation and administration of Microsoft SQL Server databases.

Technical Consultant

Depending upon your career path and direction there are several certifications that would enhance your skill set. Start with an MCTS which will target a Microsoft technology and continue to the MCITP, which will demonstrate your skills in hanling all aspects of IT infrastructure.

Another route would be to get an MCTS and continue to the MCSD, MCSA, or MCSE. As a MCSD you would be the decisive expert on all aspects of the application lifecycle. You would know how to design and develop using Microsoft development tools, technologies, and platforms. As an MCSE you would have the knowledge to do the analysis, design, and implementation of infrastructures. The MCSA is one step down from the MCSE and takes out the analysis and design, focusing on managing and troubleshooting system environments.

Network Adminstrator

The MSCE is targeted to any Network Administrator who uses Microsoft Windows and backoffice applications. As an MCSE you would have the knowledge to do the analysis, design, and implementation of infrastructures.

Windows Vista Certification might be getting dinged in the press lately, but it’s not stopping anyone from seeking their MCTS: Vista-Configuration certification. In fact, the title appear to be one of the hottest of the new-generation MCP exams.

According to numbers posted on the Microsoft MCP Web site early last week, 18,869 IT pros worldwide passed an exam to obtain the MCTS: Windows Vista-Configuration. The next big gainer? The MCTS: .NET Framework 2.0-Web Applications, with 266 fewer than the Vista title.
The MCTS: Vista-Configuration title has been available since Jan. 2007, which is when Microsoft
released the 70-620 TS: Vista-Configuration exam. The MCTS: .NET-Web Apps title had a head start, becoming a valid credential when one of the two required exams finally saw daylight back in March 2006 (in this case, Exam 70-536 TS: .NET Framework 2.0 - Application Development Foundation; the other exam that makes up the title is 70-528 TS: .NET Framework 2.0-Web-Based Client Development, which was released two months earlier).

Tops on the list of new-generation titles is MCTS: SQL Server 2005, with 27,52, but it was among the first of the new-generation MCP titles to be released.

The MCTS credentials for Windows Server 2008, which were just released a few weeks ago, already been issued to around 6,000 and 7,000 MCPs worldwide for the three credentials, and the MCTS: SharePoint Server-Configuration title comes in at 5,687.

An article from from a blog by trikah@microsoft.com, which may be helpful:

Microsoft MCP mentors is a cool new program some people around here are cooking up, through which our certified community helps others get started in IT. To participate in this pilot, it makes most sense if you are in eastern U.S. or Canada, so you’re in the same time zone. But more on that later…

Share your stories and help build the MCP community! Become an MCP Mentor.

As an experienced MCP, you have many stories–of both successes and failures. There was the time when the new guy brought down the entire system. The time you spent an entire week troubleshooting that elusive problem. And the time you completed your task in record time. Microsoft Learning invites you to share your stories, skills, and experience to make a difference in someone’s life as an MCP Mentor.

How It Works

The MCP Mentor Program matches an experienced Microsoft Certified Professional (you) with someone new to IT and studying to pass their first Microsoft Certification exam (your mentee). Through the program, your real-world perspective, technical skills, and community connections can help others overcome the experience gap to complete a path to proven skills, new career opportunities, and confidence.

As an MCP Mentor, you will share real-world experience with your mentee about objectives that are covered by the Microsoft Certification exam, helping to build self-confidence about his or her technical skills and preparedness. You will meet regularly with your mentee by phone or e-mail. In addition, you and your mentee will have access to an online community to share best practices, tips, and study tools. The online community also helps you and your mentee connect with other IT professionals of diverse experience, perspectives, and backgrounds.

Volunteer For The Pilot At Walter Reed Army Medical Center, United States
Microsoft Learning is running a pilot of this program in conjunction with the IT Academy that is associated with Walter Reed Army Medical Center. The soldiers in this IT Academy program are recovering from recent injuries and waiting to find out if they will be discharged from the military. Most of these soldiers enter the IT Academy program with little or no experience in IT.

The MCP Mentor Program is not intended to be a replacement for training, but instead to supplement training. An experienced MCT supports these soldiers in their preparation. But these soldiers would benefit greatly from the kind of 1:1 mentoring relationship that you can provide. We need volunteer mentors to help these soldiers build the skills that are validated on their target exam(s), enter the IT profession, and join the MCP community. We are specifically looking for:

-IT professionals (vs. developers) with experience on MCDST exams 70-271 and 70-272

- Commitment of 2-4 hours per month over a 3-6 month period
- Local to mid-Atlantic United States preferred

How To Participate
If you are interested in volunteering, go to http://connect.microsoft.com and enter this Invitation ID to fill out an application survey: MNTR-CGPX-QQKK. If you have questions about this program, you can contact the MCP Mentor Program administrators at mcpmntr@microsoft.com

Employment opportunities & your future after the CompTIA A Plus Exam
The IT field has a virtually limitless arena for the serious individuals who obtain certification, including:
Manufacturing
Field Service Technician
In-House PC Technician
Data Warehousing
Internet Helpdesk
In-House Training
Programmer
Network Design
Freelancer
Business Owner
Teacher
Network Administration
The technician is not only limited to the field of computer science. There are other areas of employment where basic electronics knowledge gained through training can be useful. Telephone, cable, satellite, high speed data, and security systems installation are just a few of these fields.
Let’s take a look at my career for example.
Living in one of the larger metropolitan areas can make for a challenging job search.
Networking with friends and peers is an invaluable tool. Soon after passing the CompTIA A+ exam, a friend of mine told me about my first job lead. I managed to land a position with a local computer recycling company as their printer repair technician. While this was not the corporate Chief Information Officer (CIO) position I had hoped for, at least it was a beginning. If only I had paid attention to the section on printers. Fortunately for me the lead technician was very willing to spend some extra time with me, and as it turns out printers are not that complex. The top 5 problems I experienced with laser printers are:
Bad feed rollers (you know, the stupid machine won’t grab the paper)
Bad Fuser (the printer spits out paper and the black toner just falls off the paper, what a mess)
Bad AC module (dull print or half fused)
Bad DC module (wavy or lined print)
Bad Corona Wire (no print at all - the -5000 volt charge wasn’t present to get the toner on the paper before fusing)
Every now and then you could rub a compound called “ephedrine” on the feed roller to make it sticky again but this is only a short-term resolution. Bad AC/DC modules had very similar printing errors and troubleshooting these components is not easy. Luckily we had two full boxes of each from other recycled printers, so I usually just replaced both parts.
During my short stint in printer repair, one of the local cable companies started the first pilot program for high-speed data (otherwise known as cable internet). With screaming page loads and download speeds I could not turn down the opportunity to be a high-speed cable installation technician. My recent experience combined with my A+ certification were definite assets here, and the cable company knew it. When you can open any computer case you want to and not worry about the “warranty” tag, it is awesome. Face-to-face interaction with clients is a delicate skill that you must acquire somewhere along your IT journey.
My next position was manufacturing PC’s for Compaq Computer Corp (before the HP merger). After 2 short weeks I was offered an assistant team lead position, and shortly after that I was asked to work in special projects. There is nothing like having 8 processors with 16 gigabytes of ram and 2 terabytes of 10,000 RPM SCSI hard drive to play with. While working 12hr shifts I decided to take my hobby to the next level. I was beginning to take my IT career seriously and decided to pursue an Associates degree. Working at Compaq during this time was a great opportunity. I had access to hardware and software that few of my fellow classmates had.

Needless to say, knowledge is power. I managed to use my CompTIA A+ as “applied knowledge” and test out of the beginning class saving myself $2,400 tuition. I must say, knowing that I had passed the A+ exam
